Yesterday, September 3rd, marked the end of the Devcent Summer Children Coding Bootcamp, and I had the privilege of attending—not as a participant this time, but as a proud ward. My niece, Faridah Salako Adewuyi, was among the young talents who took part in the program, and to my delight, she emerged as the Best Overall Student.
Watching her take the stage to present the app she built with Python—a menstrual cycle calculator—was a moment of pure pride. At her age, seeing her think through a real-life problem and provide a solution with code was nothing short of inspiring. It wasn’t just about the app itself, but about the confidence, clarity, and creativity she displayed in explaining her work.
Of course, Faridah wasn’t the only star of the day. Other students also showcased incredible projects they had been working on throughout the bootcamp. From games to simple web apps, it was clear that each child had gained not only technical skills but also a sense of ownership and pride in their work. The excitement in the room was contagious, and you could feel how proud the parents were of their children’s growth.
Much of the success of the bootcamp goes to the dedication of their tutor, Mr. Seun, who guided the students patiently and made coding fun and approachable. And of course, a big credit goes to the Founder of Devcent, Mr. Tosin Fakile, whose vision made this entire program possible. The structure, mentorship, and support given to these kids created a learning environment where curiosity could thrive.
Leaving the event, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful about the future. If children can already build meaningful projects at such a young age, imagine what they’ll achieve in the coming years with continued support and opportunities like this.
For me personally, it was more than just attending a bootcamp presentation—it was witnessing a generation of young problem-solvers taking their first steps into the tech world. And seeing Faridah shine so brightly reminded me of why these initiatives matter.
The Devcent Summer Children Coding Bootcamp may have ended, but its impact will continue to echo in the minds of the students, parents, and everyone who was part of the experience.
